Speaking of the outdoors, The Rock Island Parks and Recreation Department operates nearly 850 acres of land with 26 sites for fitness and aerobic programs for all, as well as picnic areas and a place to exercise outdoors. Also on the city outskirts is Black Hawk Park State Historic Site, located on a 150 foot bluff overlooking the Rock River, and includes the interesting John Hausberg Museum of Native American Life. In addition, Rock Island is home to the Rock Island Arsenal, which produces armaments for the U.S. Army. The Arsenal employs about 6,000 Rock Island residents.
